Jon Doi Obituary

Jon Tsuyoshi Doi was born in Los Angeles, CA to Robert and Jane(Kanazawa) Doi. At the age of 3, Jon and his family were relocated to an Internment Camp in Rohwer, AR under Executive Order 9066 during WWII. When the camps closed, the Dois were relocated to Muskegon, MI, but soon Jon was sent to live with relatives in

Philadelphia while his parents went to Chicago to rebuild their lives.

Jon came to Chicago to attend and graduate from Hyde Park High School before enrolling at Michigan State University. Quickly realizing engineering was not the right career path, Jon graduated with a degree in advertising, but spent his first two years after graduation serving in the National Guard. At the completion of his service, he returned to Chicago to work for Sears National Advertising where he would later meet the love of his life, Jean.

Because it was against company policy to date coworkers, Jon and Jean kept their relationship a secret. About the time Jon got a new job, Jean took a Friday off ... to get ready for their wedding on March 29, 1968.

Before kids, the other love of Jon’s life (besides Jean) was auto racing. Weekends were spent around the Midwest with the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) in his silver Porsche. When he tired of coming in last place, he hung up the racing gloves, but his love of cars never dwindled.

Moving to Highland Park, IL, Jon and Jean had two children. Their first child, a daughter, they named Eve because, they swear, they just liked the name. Their second child, a son, they named Adam. However, Jon never missed an opportunity to introduce his family to others by asking, “Have you met our kids, Adam & Eve?”

The family went to church regularly, but it was one service at Michigan’s Grace Youth Camp where Jon responded to an altar call and asked Jesus to be his Lord and Savior. Jon’s new life in Christ was evident in his gentler demeanor and hope for Heaven.

Jon and Jean often served at church leading classes and coordinating events. Jon’s volunteer service eventually led him to serve on the board of Northside Pregnancy Resource Center in Chicago. His involvement there became an opportunity to introduce Jean to the ministry, where she later became Executive Director.

Jon’s final career stop was as the Vice President, Branch Manager for the MZD Chicago Office where his major account was Coca-Cola.

When he retired, Jon reluctantly volunteered with the Lake County Jail Ministry. However, it quickly became a passion for him; ministering to men in prisons, advocating for them, writing letters, finding resources, and even trying to promote artwork of many of the men. He maintained several relationships with these men during their sentences and after their release, continuing to provide encouragement and accountability.

Jon loved his family deeply and he valued friendships. He was faithful to his men’s Bible Study group for decades, he instantly engaged with Eve’s and Adam’s friends with lighthearted humor and new audiences for his old, old, old jokes.

Jon’s legacy survives through his wife Jean; Daughter Eve (Bryan) Lederhouse; Son Adam(Grace) Doi; Grandchildren Isaac and Hannah Doi, Kenna Lederhouse; Brother-in-law JimMaxwell; “Outlaw” Son and Daughter Adler and Natasha Chan; “Outlaw” grandchildren Phaedra and Lincoln.
